Kids Workshop @ BMOCA

I taught a really fun kids workshop this summer titled reCYCLEd at BMOCA.
We created bags, bracelets, and finger puppets from inner tubes, and prints from cut up inner tubes. The kids learned how to draw a bike, used bike parts to print bike flags and decorated our bikes for the final bike parade on the last day.

Tubes need a new home

It took 3 days to deinstall at BMOCA. Thanks to those who came out and helped. The last day, I was on my own and ended up hauling 150 panels each weighing an average of 20 lbs. Moving the panels from the museum via shopping cart, from cart to truck, from truck to storage. Took from 10 am to 5pm with a lunch break. Right now I never want to touch another tube again, unless it’s to fix a flat on my road bike. Thankfully I have tubeless tires/rims on my mountain bike!

Sad to take down the installation and have it sleep in storage for an indefinite period of time. So now, I am searching for a new, PERMANENT inner tube installation venue. May the cycle continue…Ourrubberos!

It was a fantastic turnout. As the evening progressed it was interesting to see how visitors interacted with the installation. People began to touch, smell, sit, and crawl on the installation. Countless hours of work finally to be enjoyed by all the senses (with the exception of taste, of course).

inner tube collecting

It always amazes me how many inner tubes are destined for the landfills, even in the eco conscious town of Boulder. I am discovering that most bike shops I visit (in Boulder there is a bike shop and a grocery store on practically every corner) on the Front Range do not recycle their tubes. Thus far I have saved approximately 1500 tubes from the landfill. It saddens me to think of how many tubes are buried underground. We certainly do live in a throw-away culture which is becoming a global culture as we humans accumulate more useless crap. Hey, I am guilty of it, I just bought new kitchen chairs yesterday.

Working and living in Mongolia under the auspices of the Peace Corps has been my only escape from living in a throw away culture, partly because it was in the early 90′s and the Mongolians had no access to throw away consumer products. Nothing was packaged and plastic bags were like gold.

Still on the hunt or race to find tubes before they get thrown into the dumpster, about 7,500 to go!
